Alef Beysics: The Basics of the Yiddish Alphabet

The Yiddish Alphabet (alef beys) may look familiar if you know Hebrew—but in Yiddish, we use some of the letters differently. In this class, we’ll explore how the alef-beys (alphabet) is pronounced in Yiddish and get comfortable with some of the features that make it unique.

This class is designed for people who already have a basic familiarity with the Hebrew alphabet and want to start seeing how it works in Yiddish. Together, we’ll practice sounding things out and gradually work our way up to familiar words and then reading full Yiddish sentences aloud.

But most important: this will be a warm, heymish space to learn—no stress, no pressure, and no shame. Just curiosity, patience, lovingkindness: A chance to connect to the language and to Yiddishkeyt itself.
